If your trip to the doctor left you feeling down about having to be confined to a wheelchair for the majority of your life, don't fret! You're not alone, and you certainly will have plenty of help along the way. But the first thing to do would be to look into getting that wheelchair. However, if you cannot afford one altogether, there may be some alternative resources that you could turn to in order to get your own wheelchair for free or at very little cost to you.

The first place you should look for is where your own doctor suggested. If he hasn't suggested any place, then ask friends or family member if they know of any place that gives away free wheelchairs. You may be surprised at the knowledge that your friends give you. They may even know people that will be able to get you in contact with someone who gives away medical supplies, like wheelchairs, to those people in need of them. Use your friends as a networking tool as it can be a great help!

Next, if that does not get you anywhere, try a local hospital. Sometimes they give free wheelchairs away to those who need them, and you should be no exception. If Medicare won't cover it for some reason or another and you have no health insurance, a local hospital may be able to get you into a free wheelchair. Don't let your own pride get in the way when searching for a wheelchair. After all, you do need help, so seek it out!

Your city's chamber of commerce would also be a great place to go. Usually, the Chamer of Commerce will be able to give out information that will tell you such things as who donates and who doesn't. In this case of needing a free wheelchair, you definitely will need to be donated to. Another resource would be a local church. If you don't go to church and aren't involved, then that's okay too. Usually organizations such as churches who help people in need are not all that publicized, so some phone calls would be a good idea in your search to find a free wheelchair that will be donated to you. Of course, you may have to settle for a used wheelchair, which should be fine if you cannot afford one.

If all else fails, look in a phonebook! You'll be surprised at what you can find, and it may just lead you to getting a free wheelchair! Do not give up, though! All the resources that you'll be able to find will be in a phonebook, and you will be able to have access to the phone numbers for churches, the chamber of commerce, and even non-profit organizations many times will be listed in the phonebook.
