Sports for the Disabled
There are many sports for the disabled as well as able-bodied. There are many organizations who promote marathons, like wheelchair races, for the disabled, so they can enjoy and compete as well.
All over the world there are many organizations dedicated to helping people with disabilities compete in sports. A popular organization here in the United States is called Disabled Sports USA, and not only do they offer wheelchair races, but they also offer other sports, like wheelchair soccer, bowling, swimming, rock climbing, and track and field. However, not only in the United States are sports offered for those in wheelchairs and who have other disabilities; other opportunites exist in countries like Australia, Canada, and South America.
Wheelchair racing is one of the most popular disabled sports, however. People from all over the country get involved in the competitions. A well known Paralympic Champion who holds the world record in wheelchair racing is named Lisa Franks. She is twenty-three years old and lives in Canada. She travels all over the world competing in the Paralympics, which is the equivalent of the Olympics, except for the disabled. There are many people who get involved in the Paralympics, and Lisa Franks has done her part. You can actually take a look at her accomplishments of wheelchair racing on her own website at www.lisafranks.net.
Aside from people competing in wheelchair racing and other sports that involve wheelchairs, there are even many groups located on the internet that get involved in the excitement of the different sports for the disabled. An example would be the Wheelchair Racing Group at Yahoo! Groups, which brings people together from all over the world to talk and discuss such issues like the next world competitions of wheelchair sports, or even local wheelchair races and competitions. These groups are located everywhere on the internet, and you can find them easily enough with only the simple click of a mouse.
If you are in a wheelchair for the majority of your life, there is no need to feel alone. There are plenty of people who are just like you, but share the same joys and experiences as those who are able-bodied. Many people even try to not think about why or how that they're in a wheelchair, but focus instead on improving the quality of their life, and getting more involved in clubs, activities, and even sports, which has been shown that many people succeed at. The best thing to do if you desire to get involved is to ask a friend or family member to help you get started. They will be able to help you with research on how to start to get involved, contacting different people from many organizations for the disabled, and most of all, they will help motivate you to participate in such event as wheelchair racing or wheelchair basketball!
