Careers for the Disabled
There are many careers that people who are in wheelchairs can have. A person in a wheelchair is quite capable of doing many things the same way as an able-bodied person can. A few of the careers for people in wheelchairs are outlined in this article.
One popular career for someone who is in a wheelchair permanently is a teacher at a school or professor at a college or university. Just as someone who is capable of standing with two legs able to teach successfully, so is the person in a wheelchair who has other disabilities. There is a lot of technology these days that makes this profession even easier and makes it more convenient for a person in a wheelchair. For example, Microsoft Powerpoint presentations and the use of overheads allow the professor or teacher to stay in their wheelchair while they play the presentation and lecture while scrolling through the presentation. There are even voice activated software applications that will hear your voice and type whatever you say. That would allow the professor even more ability to create the presentation in the first place. Even though he or she might need the use of a personal assistant, the technologies make their job a lot more easier.
Another career that would be well suited for someone who is confined to a wheelchair would be a sports coach. If you think about it, a sports coach career would be almost perfect for someone in a wheelchair. A sports coach's job is to motivate those who he or she is coaching, and teach them such lessons as perserverance and discipline. What better way for athletes to learn these lessons than from someone who is confined to a wheelchair? Someone like that has gone through their own obstacles, as in a sports game, and endured everything that has resulted in them being in the wheelchair to begin with. So a coach would be a successful career for someone in a wheelchair!
Other careers that a person who is in a wheelchair can have easily are a guidance counselor, lawyer, or receptionist for an office. Actually, a CEO of a large corporation may even be confined to a wheelchair! Let's face it- even our own United States President was confined to a wheelchair at one point. Granted, President Roosevelt's presidential term did not start out that way, but he did successfully lead the country with the help of the First Lady and his close aides, all while being confined to his wheelchair while he was sick with Polio.
If you are stuck to being in a wheelchair and you are reading this right now-- there is hope! Do not give up on your abilities, but instead, brainstorm ideas and careers that you would be well suited for! As learned in this article, there are many many careers that can be had by those who are confined to wheelchairs, and nothing is denied to those who want to succeed! All it takes is perserverance and discipline!
